Prey capture, drinking and defensive behaviour were studied in the Scorpionidae and the Buthidae. Five typical positions of the scorpions were found . In the prey- c apture and defensive behaviour , it is found that the Scorpionidae rely far more on their chelae than do the Buthidae, who r ely mainly on their me t asoma and acul eus for subdueing the prey and warding off oppon ent s . The theory of Hadley and Williams (1968) was confirmed, that scorpions do not necessarily feed at t he point of capture. In both Scorpionidae and Buthidae, the prey is orientated t o a head first position before being eaten. Drinking is achieved by the movement of the chelicerae and pumping of water as indicated by movement of the first pair of legs . The behaviour of both families is very similar when drinking .
